The FA Cup 4th Round provided a perfect example of why this historic competition still captures the attention of soccer fans around the world. Manchester United was knocked out on penalties by Championship side Middlesbrough, while non-league Boreham Wood shocked Bournemouth on the road. Elsewhere, both Chelsea and West Ham United only narrowly avoided surprise defeats against lowly Plymouth Argyle and Kidderminster Harriers, respectively.

Can Middlesbrough Cause Another FA Cup Upset?

The Emirates FA Cup 5th Round Draw took place ahead of Liverpool’s win over Cardiff, with several fascinating ties to look forward to. Middlesbrough’s reward for winning Old Trafford is a home clash against Antonio Conte’s Tottenham Hotspur. Chris Wilder’s men will be quietly confident of another upset, especially given the inconsistency of Spurs over recent weeks. Cheered on by a packed house at The Riverside Stadium, this is certainly a match to consider for those looking to bet on an FA Cup surprise.

Many authoritative bookmakers (Full list: www.top-betting-sites.co.uk/) offer odds on all FA Cup 5th Round matches, with the all-Premier League clash between Southampton and West Ham likely to attract major interest from customers. Both teams have been in good form of late, with West Ham still challenging for a place in the Premier League top 4. Both clubs will be hoping for an extended FA Cup run this year, with a trip to Wembley not being out of the question for either.

Frank Lampard took over at Everton following the dismissal of Rafa Benitez, with the former England international knowing that a good FA Cup run would put him in the good books of fans at Goodison Park. The Toffees have been handed a favorable draw as they take on Boreham Wood. It would seem unlikely that the non-league side can pull off another shock, although 37-year-old captain Mike Ricketts will be doing his utmost to do just that.

Will Man City & Liverpool Make it Safely Through?

Premier League table-toppers Manchester City, fresh off the back of a 5-0 win over Sporting Lisbon in the Champions League, will look to maintain their winning streak when they make the trip to Peterborough. The main priority from now until the end of the season for Darren Ferguson’s men is to remain in the second tier of English football. However, the FA Cup will provide a welcome distraction from their Championship struggles. A victory over City looks unlikely, though, with Pep Guardiola seemingly having the Midas touch, regardless of the starting XI named.

Fellow Premier League title challengers Liverpool are the firm favorites to progress to the next round of the FA Cup when they host Norwich City. Jurgen Klopp’s side has a wealth of attacking options, with this 5th Round tie likely to give new signing Luis Diaz another chance to shine in front of the Anfield faithful. However, with Norwich having done well to get past Wolves in the previous round, a Canaries win is not out of the question. This is the FA Cup, after all!

Other 5th Round Ties to Keep a Close Eye On

2016 FA Cup runners-up Crystal Palace host Stoke City at Selhurst Park, with the Eagles looking to Wilfred Zaha and Connor Gallagher to help them through to the next round. The Potters were losing finalists back in 2011, with the club having dropped down to the Championship since then.

Elsewhere, the tie between Luton Town and Chelsea promises fireworks, despite the Blues obviously having a better team on paper. Thomas Tuchel’s side recently won the Club World Cup, with the FA Cup likely to be their only chance of adding another trophy to their cabinet this season.

The 5th Round Draw is made up by Nottingham Forest and Huddersfield Town, with the Championship duo having overcome Leicester City and Barnsley in the previous round, respectively. With Forest being the home team, they will be the favorites to progress, with Brennan Johnson and Djed Spence hoping to add to their ever-growing reputations in the process.

FA Cup 5th Round ties will occur between March 1-7, with a place in the quarter-finals being up for grabs. Fans of the teams involved will already dream of a trip to Wembley. However, there will undoubtedly be some shocks along the way.
