Poker is more than just a card game. A combination of the multimillionaire stars of the WSOP and big-screen exposure from movies ranging from The Sting to Casino Royale have transformed it into a unique part of gentleman culture. Put more simply, playing poker is inherently cool.

If you’ve never quite got around to playing, it can seem like a daunting idea to rush in where angels fear to tread. However, the hardest step is the first. Let’s run through the basics of poker and get you started – once you’re on your way, developing your game is the fun part, and you’ll never stop learning.

Video poker – the ideal proving ground

The off-putting thing for beginners is the idea of sitting down at a table with more experienced players when you haven’t a clue what you are doing. That’s not an issue with video poker. It’s just you against the machine, and you can either sit down at a terminal in a casino or install a video poker app on your phone.

Don’t be put off by the dozen or so different types of video poker. The differences are subtle, and Jacks or Better is the one to choose. It’s perfect for getting started, as there are no extra complications like wild cards or jokers. The great thing about video poker is it acquaints you with the basic principles that apply to all poker games, such as the different hands and how they rank. If you’re a little fuzzy about the difference between a full house and a straight flush and which is better, half an hour of video poker will get everything clear in your mind.

Live Casino Holdem

Texas Holdem is the most popular form of poker. But it’s quite a leap from video poker. Casino Holdem is one of the hottest Casinoeuro live casino games and is the perfect stepping stone. It’s just you against the dealer, so there are no other players to worry about, but there is more to the gameplay than just holding or discarding.

Place your ante bet, and you and the dealer are each dealt two cards, known as hole cards. There are also five community cards dealt on the table between you. You can see your hole cards but not the dealer’s. The object is to score a better 5-card hand than the dealer using your cards and the community cards. At this stage, you can fold if you have a bad hand, losing your ante, or you can call by doubling the bet. If you do so, two more community cards will be dealt.

Further progress

Casino Holdem will help you develop a strategy for other forms of poker like Texas Holdem and Omaha. The important thing is to take your time. There’s no rush to move on, and some people simply stick with video poker and become masters at their specialty. The important thing is to keep it fun and enjoy learning poker and what you are doing.
