You are not sure why your stomach and body are acting up. It could be an undercooked burger that you ate or something from a dodgy food truck; all you are now experiencing is the aftermath of your meal choice. It could be that it only disagrees with your digestive system or a case of food poisoning. Below are the signs and symptoms that should alert you about food poisoning and the treatment measures you should take.
What Causes Food Poisoning?
Food poisoning is technically knowns as gastroenteritis, which is the irritation of the stomach and intestines caused by bacteria such as Campylobacter, Salmonella, or E. coli. It can also be caused by a virus such as norovirus.
The food poisoning is linked to what you eat because that is most likely how you picked up the bacteria or virus. The same problem can happen if you fail to wash your hands after using the bathroom, failing to clean the hands before touch food you will eat, or if you come into contact with an infected person. Sometimes, food poisoning is called ‘stomach flu’, but the problem is not related to the influenza virus.
Food Poisoning Symptoms
Symptoms can be mild or severe. The moderate signs can be something like passing stomach ache while the severe signs can be something like acute diarrhea and high fever. The onset of food poisoning can manifest as early as eight hours after contracting the bug or as late as two weeks, depending on which what you picked up. You may experience the following:

Treating Food Poisoning
- Avoid taking OTC drugs to help treat the diarrhea; see a doctor. In most cases, the body is fighting to expel the unwelcomed bug that is causing you all the trouble, and this is a natural healing process that you should interfere with wisely.
- Acute diarrhea will cause you to be dehydrated; therefore, you should take plenty of water and replenish the lost fluids in your body. Take coconut water, Gatorade, broth, or other electrolyte-rich liquids. If you what you take stays down, you can try eating some foods that are easy to digest. Consider something like rice, applesauce, toast, and bananas.
If you are healthy and with a sound immune system, the food poisoning episode will pass after a few crappy days of discomfort with no severe issues; there is little you can do to speed up the healing process. This can be some relief if you get food poisoning abroad and are panicking.
The best action to take is to stay hydrated, have plenty of rest to allow the body to focus on expelling the bug and restoring normal functions.
Seek immediate medical attention from your doctor if you experience any of the following issues:
i). You have diarrhea, and you have a fever of 101
ii). You feel light-headed or dizzy and are intensely thirsty
iii). You cannot keep anything you eat (solid or liquid) down in the last 24 hours
iv). The diarrhea has been consistent for more than four days
You should head to the Emergency Room if you have the following are life-threatening symptoms:
i). Your stool is black, maroon or with lots of blood
ii). Your heartbeat is quick heavy and erratic
iii). You have feeling nausea and vomiting after taking canned foods, shellfish, or mushrooms; these foods tend to have toxins that can cause adverse reactions that have severe impacts on your health and wellbeing.
