Casinos have everything you need as a moviemaker, from a great cast of recognizable characters to thrilling yet easy-to-follow action. They also have exotic locations with a unique air of style and sophistication about them. These days, you can play casino games anytime at NJ Casinos online, but in the golden era of Hollywood, casinos still held an aura of mystery and magic for most of us. This made places like Las Vegas the ideal location for many iconic scenes featuring stars from Sean Connery’s James Bond to Frank Sinatra’s Danny Ocean.

Casinos have featured in almost every movie genre, from comedy to gritty drama, from spy thriller to musicals. Here we take a look at ten of the best.

1. Casino

Star packed and as gritty as they come, 1995’s Casino is a hard-hitting drama exploring how the ‘mob’ were deeply involved in Las Vegas in the 70s and 80s. Robert de Niro, Joe Pesci, and Sharon Stone all live a double life between the glitzy front-of-house façade and the seedy, often violent, underbelly of the casino world.

2. Oceans 11

Just as star-studded but much lighter in tone, the original Ocean’s 11 featured the famous ‘Rat Pack’ of Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., and Frank Sinatra. The slick heist caper was a huge hit and remade in 2001, starring George Clooney, Matt Damon, and Brad Pitt, spawning two sequels, Ocean’s 12 and 13, and a gender-swapped game spin-off, Ocean’s 8.

3. Diamonds are forever

James Bond was never far from the casino. Still, perhaps his most famous scene came in the 1971 Bond film Diamonds are Forever, where he made black 17 a legendary number at the roulette table.

4. Casablanca

Rick’s Café may be famous for Sam on the piano, playing As Time Goes By. Still, it was also a popular casino in Casablanca that gave us another famous film number. Proving he has a soft side, Humphrey Bogart’s Rick tips off one desperate young couple to put their money on black 22 before tipping the wink to his croupier to fix the game in their favor.

5. Guys and Dolls

Craps is an ideal game for the movies with dynamic dice and excited rollers. Marlon Brando took to the tables in this classic musical to try and win the heart of Jean Simmons, famously trying to drum up success by singing Luck Be a Lady Tonight.

6. Indecent Proposal

Craps was also central to the thought-provoking 1993 casino movie Indecent Proposal. After throwing the winning dice for Robert Redford, Demi Moore is offered the $1m winnings for just one night with him. It sounds like a great deal, but it has endless repercussions for her relationship with her husband, Woody Harrelson.

7. Molly’s Game

Not strictly a casino movie, but rich in casino imagery, Molly’s game traces the true story of Molly Bloom, who organized high-stakes poker games for the rich and famous who could not be seen at traditional casino tables. Creative graphics helped everyone follow the action in each hand. As the pot grew and the pressure mounted.

8. Rain man

Tom Cruise is not impressed when his savant brother, Dustin Hoffman, gets their father’s $3m inheritance until he realizes that his special skills include flawless card counting, which could change that $3m into much more at the casino.

9. 21

&aking card counting to its highest level, six math students from MIT famously took the New Jersey casinos for millions of dollars at the blackjack tables before their tactics were discovered.

10. The Card Counter

The lure of the casino continues to this day, with the brand-new 2021 release The Card Counter starring Oscar Isaac as a man on a mission to take down an old enemy while winning his way across the United States on his way to the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas.
