Your after-exercise recovery routine has a significant impact on your fitness gains and long-term performance, which allows you to train much more effectively. What you eat (and don’t), the amount of sleep you get, and how you take care of your body all play a significant role in how effectively your muscle tissue repairs itself to recover, repair, and ultimately come back stronger. Fitness & Recovery Routine

My fitness journey begins at a young age getting ready for BUD/S: Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL training. Our fitness regime ranged from running miles with heavy gear to swimming miles while dragging gear, to knock down drag-out workouts on the grinder behind our SEAL Team command. We held each other accountable at the highest level. When training to become a US Navy SEAL, you know you are training to be the best. Since then, there hasn’t been any length of time that I have not exercised.

These days, my workouts generally happen in the evening after a long day’s work. Stretching is essential to minimize injury and maximize recovery. As I get older, I have learned that the more I stretch, the fewer injuries I sustained when pushing through extreme endurance workouts and being able to hit it again the next day just as hard. Staying hydrated is also equally important; your body’s muscles and organs need to be kept lubricated and refreshed. It is evident to me when I don’t take in enough water, my joints and muscles tighten up, making it uncomfortable to perform at my best. 

Workout Nutrition

Within fifteen minutes of completing my workout, I have a protein powder smoothie; the protein is critical in repairing and rebuilding your muscles. During really tough workouts, I like to think about the results I am achieving, both physically and mentally. Your body is capable of so much more than your mind gives it credit for. During SEAL training and operation tempo, your mental fortitude is everything! If your focus breaks down, your mission/goals are over. Pushing every workout to its fullest, don’t let fatigue stop you, and modify your exercises to fit your desired outcome.

Fitness starts with your mentality; I believe your mindset is the key to a healthy foundation both physically and mentally. If you are not prepared for what it will take to stay motivated, it can be challenging to achieve the desired outcome. Fitness must be a top priority at all times throughout your life. I understand that my life depends on my physical being, from looking in the mirror and being confident to advancing into old age and knowing I’ve done everything to keep my body healthy and working at peak performance.


Don’t buy into the diets and the vicious cycle of fitness trends. Learn to break bad habits, be self-aware, set goals, and crush life! Discipline builds good habits, and once you apply those habits, they become an everyday routine.

Get Out of Your Comfort Zone

You have to get out of your comfort zone. Too often, I see people do the bare minimum and wonder why they don’t see results. Don’t only do what you know you can do, push yourself past your limits. Embrace the suck and create a daily habit of a Fitness & Recovery Routine. Your thought process is essential in pushing your fitness to the next level every day of every workout.

If you’re having a hard time getting started or maintaining a workout routine, you need to ask yourself, is it important enough for you? What is your “why” to evaluate what you want for yourself and what your goals are? Your health is paramount to your success. Being physically fit and exercising does wonder for the mind and body. I suggest extensive research on the benefits of a healthy lifestyle as opposed to the complications that could occur within the body as you grow older. 

I get asked regularly if there is any specific Navy SEAL training that people can try to attempt at home. BUD/S: Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL training consists of swimming, running, continuous physical exercise, and getting your a** handed to you. It is a course put on by the Naval Special Warfare Center in Coronado, California, and is the basic qualification course. In my opinion, BUD/s is 60% mental toughness and 39% Physical fitness with 1% luck (I needed that 1%). If you are to train for it, train like your life depended on it. Train like you are the third monkey walking onto Noah’s Ark, and it’s about to rain! If you don’t have that mindset, then why bother trying to become a Navy SEAL. You need to be aware, if you are to attempt to be a SEAL, there is no time out or resting when you are tired. You have to give 110% at all times, in every evolution because if you don’t…then you have already failed! There is no quit; you either do or die!
