Herbs have been used throughout the history of man as a flavoring for food and medicinal properties. For example, the willow tree bark tea was discovered to reduce fever and pain. Turmeric is often associated with Indian dishes. It adds a yellow color to curry dishes and adds an earthy taste to your food. The active ingredient in turmeric is curcumin with a powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. Curcumin is beneficial to people with rheumatoid arthritis and may also be helpful in reducing Alzheimer’s disease.  Turmeric hemp oil is a combination of turmeric and hemp oil to further aid in removing stress.


Tulsi is related to culinary basil and is often called holy basil. It grows in India and Southeast Asia. Tulsi is used to release stress and boost energy. It is used in India for different medical treatments such as bronchitis, malaria, diarrhea, nausea, eczema, stomach ulcers, eye diseases, and insect bites. 

Tulsi contacts vitamin A and C, calcium, zinc, iron, and chlorophyll. Tulsi is often taken as a tea. Black, green, or white tea is often combined with tulsi because of its strong aroma and flavor that ranges from peppery to astringent.


Ashwagandha has been used for over 2,000 years. Some of its health benefits include reduced stress, anxiety, depression, insomnia, epilepsy, arthritis, and diabetes. It is native to India and North Africa. Ashwagandha is a prominent herb used in Indian medicine. Withaferin is an active component of Ashwagandha that has shown in some studies that it might have anti-cancer properties. A study with mice showed a reduction in tumor growth and the prevention of cancer spreading to other organs. Ashwagandha is usually made into a tea with water, ginger, and honey.

Plantain Weed

You have probably seen plantain weed growing in parking lots or even your backyard. It is a native of Europe and parts of Asia. It is not related to the plantain fruit. The leaves can be eaten raw or cooked. Plantain weed has several health benefits. Studies have shown that it helps reduce inflammation. It may be useful in wound healing because of its anti-inflammation ability when applied topically. Combining the gel from both the aloe vera and plantain weed improved wound healing. Plantain weed may be beneficial for digestive issues.

Certain species of the passionflower plant may have medicinal benefits such as reducing anxiety and helping with insomnia. Native Americans used passionflower to heal boils, wounds, earaches, and liver problems. 

It may help soothe an upset stomach. Passionflower is often sold at health food stores as a tea, liquid extracts, capsules, and tablets.


Vanilla is very popular as a flavoring in baked goods. Vanilla comes from a tropical orchid that is native to Mexico. Today 80 percent comes from Madagascar. The process of creating vanilla extra is quite lengthy. The vanilla orchid takes up to three years to reach maturity. It only flowers for one day. Pollination must be done on the day it flowers. It takes eight to nine months for the bean pod to ripen. The beans are then cured for 12 – 14 months. Because of the length of time and expense to produce pure vanilla extra, the vanilla you buy for baked goods is usually lab-made. In addition to using vanilla in baked goods, it has many health benefits. 

Not only does vanilla have perfume qualities, but it has also been shown to help with digestion, reduce anxiety, weight-loss because of its appetite-suppressing qualities. Vanilla as an essential oil is excellent for your hair. Vanilla has antibacterial properties that help reduce acne.


Comfrey grows in parts of Europe, Asia, and North America. Japan has used comfrey for over 2,00 years for muscle sprains, bruises, burns, and joint inflammation. You can find comfrey in health stores and pharmacies as ointments, creams, and other topical solutions. You should not ingest comfrey but only use it externally as an ointment or cream for joint, wound, and pain relief for arthritis.
