My Favorite Rolexes

For decades, Rolex has produced some of the world’s finest luxury watches.  With a collection ranging from rare vintage watches to exciting and modern timepieces, choosing a favorite can seem like a pretty daunting task.  Today, I’ll touch on a few notable Rolexes that are contenders for the title of my favorite Rolex watch. Let’s start with a vintage.

Vintage Red Submariner

As it goes with most vintage Rolex watches, the vintage Submariner reference 1680 boasts an impressive history.  Released a few years after the introduction of the Submariner line, the ref. 1680, aka the “Red Submariner”, was the first reference to offer a date display on the dial as well as a magnifying Cyclops lens.  As its nickname would suggest, this particular diver’s watch also featured the name “Submariner” written in sporty red font.  This feature that was soon replaced, making this particular Rolex a highly sought-after collector’s item.

Daytona 116500

When it hit the market in 2016, the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona ref. 116500 was highly anticipated because it was the first stainless steel variation of the brand’s iconic racer’s watch to offer a Cerachrom bezel.  The bezel itself is meticulously produced, featuring a highly resilient ceramic finish and graduations filled with platinum.  When paired with the polished and satin 904L stainless steel finish of the case and bracelet, the result is absolute perfection. The Daytona also boasts the Rolex calibre 4130 perpetual movement, which was already in production and celebrated for its incredibly accurate reading and impressive power reserve. But most importantly, the 6-digit men’s Rolex Daytona wears really well on the wrist.  The case is bold without appearing too bulky or cumbersome, and the bracelet offers a smooth and comfortable hold.  Classy enough for formal occasions yet functional enough for the racetrack, the ref. 116500 is the total package.

“Batman” GMT Master II

It should come as no surprise that the GMT Master II ref. 116710 has made my list.  Better known as the “Batman”, this particular GMT Master features an innovative black and blue Cerachrom bezel.  This particular watch is very popular among those who are avid fans of the Rolex line. The Rolex Batman is a very distinguishable watch.  Rolex collectors in-the-know can appreciate the skillful craftsmanship that goes into making a two-tone ceramic bezel, which makes this reference even more impressive.  Similar to the previously discussed Daytona, the Batman GMT Master fits nicely on the wrist, thanks to the addition of 40mm Oyster case with wide lugs and a three-link Oyster bracelet secured by a tool-free Easylink extension link.  The broad fit of the case is perfectly complemented by a maxi dial topped with larger and more legible luminous hour markers and hands.
