Men’s skincare products may not get as much hype as those marketed to women, but this doesn’t mean that macho male skin requires any less care. Men should use a well-rounded daily and weekly skincare routine with a variety of well-chosen products to keep their skin smooth, attractive, and kissable. Say goodbye to bumps, redness, and discomfort. These tips will help you troubleshoot common problems, purchase the right products, and maintain soft, healthy skin.
Use a Smart Shaving Routine
Many men get in the habit of shaving a particular way and never reconsider their methods. Stop and think carefully about your shaving routine and consider making a few smart changes for softer skin and a better shave. Shaving in or just after you shower is ideal, as your skin is warm, wet, and perfectly primed for a good shave.
Apply a shave gel or cream and let it sit for a minute before you begin shaving so the hair has time to soften. Shave with the grain of the hair and not against it to avoid irritation, and aim for one pass on each area of the face.
Invest in Your Razor
Cheap razors give you a cheap shave, pure and simple. Invest in a higher quality razor to protect your skin from irritation. While added blades may seem like a good thing, they can actually increase skin irritation. Added blades can pull hairs below the skin too deep, causing ingrown hairs or razor burn. Three blades is a safe number for most men, but you may want to downgrade to just two if your skin is prone to irritation.
Read Your Labels
Pay attention to the labels on your skincare products, particularly if you’re prone to acne. Men typically struggle with adult acne more than women because testosterone stimulates sebum production in hair follicles, giving them more oily skin. Look for products that say “non-comedogenic” or “oil-free” to keep acne at bay. If you are still unsure consider visiting a dermatologist in your city; i.e. London best dermatologist or wherever you are located.
If you’re looking for a suite of products that will complement each other well rather than doubling up on certain effects or ingredients, choose a face wash, shaving foam, and moisturizer from the same line. Look for products from a reliable name. Amway made the Forbes list of largest private companies in America for its extensive product lines, which include a well-rounded selection for men’s skincare.
Lather Up Daily
You should wash your face twice a day with a cleanser containing glycolic acid to remove dead skin cells and encourage rejuvenation. An exfoliating scrub will also help slough away stubborn skin and remove other buildup and grime. You shouldn’t exfoliate more than twice a week. Cut back on the exfoliation part of your routine if your skin gets irritated or red.
Moisturize When Damp
It may go against your instincts to moisturize your face when it’s already wet, but this is actually the most efficient way to keep your skin soft and supple. Lightly pat your face dry after washing and apply your moisturizer while the skin is still damp. This will help seal in moisture for a face that’s nuzzle-worthy all day long. Oil-based moisturizers work well for normal skin. If your face is especially oily, switch to a water-based moisturizer instead.
Slather on SPF
You need to apply sunscreen every day — not just when you’re spending long hours in the sun. For your average daily use, apply sunscreen with SPF 30. When you’re planning outdoor activities, up the ante with a product that has SPF 50. Don’t rely on a single daily application to get you through till evening. Put on sunscreen at least 30 minutes before you go outside for maximum protection, and reapply every two hours.
If your skin doesn’t look as smooth, young, or healthy as you’d like, the answer probably lies in your daily skincare routine. Try switching up your products, upgrading to a new razor, or changing up your methods to get the look you’re after. Something as simple as adding a nightly wash or moisturizing more often can make a big difference that others are sure to notice.
