I’ve recently learned that my apartment, is not the only thing that needs a thorough cleaning. After a long winter and a dreadful tax season, it dawned on me, I was spending too much time working and not enough time on my personal life. With summer just around the corner, it was definitely time for SPRING CLEANING! As an entrepreneur living in a vibrant and cultured city, it’s vital that I make the best of what I have; which until now I hadn’t. Don’t get me wrong, neglecting work is not the way forward. What I am referring to is “Balance”. Guys, when I say “Balance is Key”, I truly mean it. It’s incredibly important to find time for every aspect of your life. Too much of one thing is never a good thing. If this is ringing bells, take a look at the steps that I have taken. They should set you off in the right direction. I can confidently tell you that they’ve done wonders for me!
Step 1 Refresh
Take a moment, reflect, soak up all the important information and leave the rest behind. Think of this as your laptop, sometimes it gets overwhelmed with information, so you just hit the refresh button and everything seems to run much smoother. While the refresh button helps, it doesn’t necessarily remove the information that you don’t want lurking around (cookies). The information that in our mind is hindering our ability to see life from a different perspective. This is when you know it’s time to clear the unnecessary cookies, they’re only taking up space and preventing you from seeing anything new. Once your mind is clear and ready to start fresh with a clean slate, you can move on to step number two!
Step 2 Make a list
I hope you’ve cleared all of the cookies at this point, because it’s time to make your list! It is essential that you make a list of what you feel needs improvement. Something to take into consideration while creating your list is that it should include all things that bring you joy as well as a sense of accomplishment. These things can include but are not limited to: business/finances, social life, personal hobbies, health, family etc. I suggest taking out the old pen and paper for this one. It will help you envision your goals, making it easier to implement them, at least it did for me!
One of the things I personally needed to change was the amount of time spent on work. I am an aspiring photographer and found I wasn’t able to spend enough time practicing my hobby. This is where the list came in handy, I realized one of the things I was spending loads of time on was invoicing my clients. It was just a hassle, having to create an invoice alone took ages, and they weren’t even pleasing to the eye. So, I decided to do some research and found a great online invoicing service: Invoice Home. I’ve been using it for a month now and I have yet to complain. It’s made my life tremendously easier, it takes only a few minutes to create an invoice and I can choose from different invoice templates, so they’re actually aesthetically pleasing.
Step 3 Put it into Action
While invoicing played a major role in my time lost it was only one of the things getting in my way of the balance I had been craving. Some other things that got in the way had to do with my lifestyle as a whole. For example cooking. I love to cook but it tends to take up lots of time, so now I just dedicate one day a week (usually Sundays) to meal prepping and it saves me loads of time. Basically, creating this list and writing my thoughts out helped me realize where I wasn’t using my time wisely.
I can now practice my photography skills, invoice my clients much quicker, eat healthy meals without spending too much time on them, and enjoy the vibrant cultured city that I live in.
Just make sure that when you write your list down, you don’t forget about it, keep it somewhere you will see it everyday, this will help you put it all into action as it has done for me!
