The Best Ways to Get Rid of Your Old Smartphone When You Upgrade

If you have just upgraded to a new phone, or are just about to, it can be hard to know what to do with the old model. Excited as you may be to get your hands on the latest device, it can seem like a waste to leave your old phone unloved in a drawer gathering dust, and considering how much you may have paid for it, even worse to simply throw it away. Additionally, you need to consider that disposing of electronic devices any old way (for example with your regular rubbish), is really bad for the environment, so you do need a proper means of disposal.

If you want to do something useful with your old phone, as well as being eco friendly, here are a few ideas for how you can get rid of it without wasting it:

Give it to a Friend

If you are someone who upgrades regularly, for instance getting the latest model of your favourite line of phones as soon as it is released, your old phone may well still be a more up to date, feature rich model than the phones some of your friends have. Not everybody likes to update their phone so often, or prioritises it as an expenditure, so you may find you have a friend who’d see your old handset as an upgrade, and be more than happy to take it off your hands. If you decide to gift the phone to a friend (or sell it to them, or trade it for something they have that you want), then they may need to unlock it to use it on their network. Services like unlockingsmart.co.uk can help them do this, so they can use their own SIM in your old device.

Sell It Online

If you want to make back some of the money you spent on the old phone, there are a few ways you can sell it. If your model is in good working order and fairly recent, selling it privately somewhere like eBay will usually get you the best price. If your phone is not really sought after on sites like that because it is old or slightly broken, you may still be able to get money for it by selling it to an online phone recycling company.

More Novel Uses

Of course, if you don’t want to actually part with the old phone, because you’re attached to it, then giving it away or selling it isn’t such a good solution. You could just keep it as a reserve phone – keeping it charged and carrying it ready to slip your SIM into if your new phone’s battery dies when you’re out. Alternatively, consider other more novel uses. You could keep it permanently docked at home with your music on it and use it as a stereo system, or if you are the creative type, make some kind of art piece out of it!

Don’t let your old phone gather dust when you get a new one – get it into the hands of someone else who can use it, or find a new way to use it yourself!
