Better late than never, Euro 2020 is just a month away, and fans around the world will finally get to set their eyes on some of the best footballers in the world representing their countries. However, when we think of the teams taking part, our thoughts generally focus on the teams labeled among the favorites to win, such as England, Germany, Belgium, France, and Spain.
However, could one of the outsiders provide a shock? The Netherlands, Italy, and Croatia are among the teams many would class as the best of the rest. Could they upset the form book and bring home the Euro 2020 trophy?
Managed by Frank de Boer, the Netherlands always do well at international tournaments but falls short in the latter stages. Could 2020 be the year they break that hoodoo? They certainly have some top-class players that can challenge the top teams. The likes of Virgil van Dijk, a player that many think should have won the 2019 Ballon d’Or, Memphis Depay, and Gini Wijnaldum, would arguably walk into the starting lineups of most other nations.
The Top Kids at Euro 2020
One of the great things about international tournaments such as Euro 2020 is that each event always brings many of the world’s top kids into global prominence. This is their chance to shine on a massive stage and up their stardom levels. When asked who you think will be the top 20 kids at Euro 2020, most of you will mention obvious names such as Phil Foden, Ferran Torres, Jadon Sancho, and Erling Haaland. These young players have already established themselves at the club level.
However, other Euro 2020 top young football players are not as obvious but stand a great chance of having a good tournament. Ozan Kabak (Turkey), Sven Botman and Owen Wijndal (Netherlands), Mikkel Damsgaard (Denmark), Jeremy Doku (Belgium), Alessandro Bastoni (Italy), and Marcus Forss are just some of the names we would put among the best 20 kids with a chance of making a name for themselves at Euro 2020.
Italy is one of the most successful international sides in Europe, but for some reason, the usual stream of talent that makes it to the top has slowed down somewhat. Euro 2020 is the 12th consecutive major tournament that Italy has qualified for but could they shock the favorites at this tournament? Italian fans have pinned their hopes on Ciro Immobile, a striker who is one of the favorites to win the Golden Boot.
Many football fans seem to forget that Croatia made the World Cup final in 2018. They were not among the favorites then and, despite that performance, remain underdogs for this event too. People also forget the talent Croatia has throughout its squad. We all know Luka Modric, but while he is an important player, Ivan Perisic, Dejan Lovren, Marcelo Brozovic, and Sime Vrsaljko are more than able to perform at the highest level.
So, could any of those three cause a shock? We think they have the ability, and with a bit of luck, they could just make their way to glory. Of course, other teams will also fancy their chances. This includes Poland, Denmark, Turkey, and Ukraine. All teams that might not be on the lips of many but might just surprise a few people.
One sure thing is that whoever wins, we are in for a feast of football at the highest standard. Football fans around the world just have a few more weeks to wait!
