Benefits of Meaningful Existence

Finding meaning in life is easy for some, but for others, it can be difficult. Some people find meaning in family or religion. Others find a passion. Some people, however, cannot find meaning in something as easily.

Research indicates that people tend to have better mental health if they have a strong sense of purpose in their lives. Not only that, but they also are more likely to participate in healthy activities. Some experts believe that those who have meaning in their lives may be better at managing stress. In addition, those who do not have a sense of purpose may use unhealthy methods to cope with high-stress levels or poor mental health.

Having a positive and meaningful aspect in life may even improve brain function, including overall cognition and memory. Not only that, but people who have purpose tend to have lower instances of depression and better overall wellbeing. However, just because it is healthy to have a sense of purpose or meaning does not mean that it is always easy to find. A sense of purpose is generally thought of as a thing or things that are most important to someone to help them make decisions, guide their behaviors, and construct their goals.

Finding Meaning

So how are we supposed to promote or find a sense of purpose? When we search for meaning in life, we are looking for the purpose of our entire existence or a purpose within our individual life.

Some people find meaning stems from their sense of belonging or recognition. Feeling valued or being a part of something larger than yourself may lead to a sense of purpose. Others find purpose in activities that they treasure, such as spending time with family or doing things they greatly enjoy. Others find meaning through connections or spirituality and the feeling that everything in the world is interrelated.

Some people find meaning through their immersion in their family, religious group, or career. These things can lead to individual growth and create something worth looking forward to. It also helps someone connect with people who have similar ideals.

Purpose Anxiety

Purpose anxiety occurs when someone develops negative feelings associated with their search for meaning or purpose. Purpose anxiety happens when a person feels that they do not have a purpose and are aware that they do not have purpose or meaning. Some people experience anxiety when they try to find a purpose without success. Others feel like they have to change their behaviors or life to find or implement their purpose.

These things can cause frustration, stress, and anxiety. Finding a purpose in your life can greatly benefit your mental health and wellbeing, but it needs to be a positive journey and experience instead of one that causes negative emotions or even unhealthy behaviors.

One healthy way to search for purpose comes in the mindset itself. Looking inward for purpose instead of trying to find it outside of yourself can help you achieve your goals. True purpose comes from knowledge of yourself. Not only that, but purpose is not found. It is created.

Purpose is created from our experiences, successes, and failures. You can find purpose in being a good neighbor, parent, or creating positivity in the world. Not only that, but your current purpose will likely be different than your purpose in five or ten years.

Logotherapy revolves around the concept that every person has a healthy inner core, and that meaning can be found no matter what your circumstances consist of. In logotherapy, a therapist will help their client find meaning in their life.

Logotherapy also holds the belief that different experiences may help someone discover their meaning in life. Our experiences have a great impact on our psyche and mental state. These experiences can teach us about the world and ourselves.

Another way that logotherapy can help someone find meaning is through adversity. When people are faced with adversity, they can choose to rise above it and grow. These experiences also give us something that we can learn from. Seeing adversity as an opportunity for individual growth can help us develop as people and possibly find greater purpose or meaning.

Final Thoughts

It is important to find meaning in life, and doing so can help your overall wellbeing and improve your mental health. A lot of people find meaning in their own experiences. Other people tend to locate a sense of purpose through their spirituality or connection to the world or other people. If you are having difficulty finding a sense of meaning, especially if you have severe purpose anxiety, you may benefit from logotherapy. In logotherapy, the therapist will work with you to help you find your purpose in a healthy way.
