Whenever the world series of poker (WSOP) rolls around again, it is a fantastic opportunity to learn a little about how the tournament as a whole operates. Here are some of the things that you should have learned from following the WSOP in 2021.
One of the first things you should have picked up, especially if you are new to the world of poker, is how the games work when played at a tournament. Something as prestigious as the WSOP is always going to attract hundreds of players, and as a result, the tables can sometimes seem a little crowded at first! However, as things begin to play out, many will duck out of the competition, and things will become a little bit easier to focus on.
If you have never played tournament poker before, this is a great way to pick up some of the do’s and don’ts that you must follow. As with many other aspects of life, strict etiquette needs to be followed when playing poker in a tournament setting. Where could be a better place for you to pick up some tips than by watching one of the most prestigious tournaments of the game?
There is More Than Just the Main Event
Though the Main Event is undoubtedly one of the big draws of poker, it is not the only event in the WSOP that is worth trying out. You also need to make sure that you check out some of the other calendar events around the year. It is a great opportunity to check out some of your favorites a little bit more closely, and you might even find some new players to follow.
For example, the mega-gaming platform GGPoker.com hosts several online events during the course of each year. Though these can be slightly trickier to follow compared to live ones, there are many opportunities for you to learn more about the game of poker. An online tournament might even be the best introduction for you if you ever want to try playing a game or two as well. Sometimes, an online tournament can seem to be a lot less intimidating than a live one.
Many people come to the world of poker only knowing standard Texas Hold’em. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this – it is a great game! However, it is just one of the many types of poker you could choose to play, especially if you decide to check out a tournament like the WSOP.
One of the most popular alternatives to Hold’em is a game called Omaha. This is another community card game, meaning there are some cards on the table and some in players’ hands, and you have to make the best hand you can from the mix. Three cards go on the table in the community set, while the players are dealt four.
Another variation that you will often see is a game called H.O.R.S.E. This includes both Texas Hold’em and Omaha, plus some variations of Stud. This is a more difficult game to pick up as the rules switch with every hand, but watching the pros play can be great fun!
