When it comes to your pad, interior design matters. It’s a reflection of you, your personal taste and style, and it can help transform your place from a house into a home. What will the woman in your life thing? Your family when you host that first barbecue? When it comes to design there are Interior Design Mistakes that are important to avoid.

Unfortunately, some people simply have no idea how to decorate, and this results in a disastrous look and feel to their home. Even if you’re not the most fashionable or trendy person, you can still create a beautiful interior to your home, you just need to make sure you know what you should do and what you shouldn’t do. So when it comes to design and décor, the following are some interior design mistakes you absolutely need to avoid.

Mistake #1: Blank Walls

You need to think of your walls as a blank canvas, and you need to adorn this blank canvas with some decorative canvas art, pictures, or other wall coverings. Leaving your walls completely blank will make it look more like a prison or asylum than it would a home. It doesn’t matter what room of the house you’re in either. Every room (bathroom, laundry room, etc.) should all have something on the walls to break up the monotony of the wall color. You can opt to buy all these items brand new, you can make your own, or you can even pick some up at a garage or yard sale.

Mistake #2: One Color

There’s a reason that paint comes in a variety of colors. When you think about paint colors for your home, it’s important that you vary the color of the rooms. If you carry the same color in every room of your home, especially white, then you will be making a bad interior design mistake. Paint can help transform a room into what you want. For example, if you’re looking for a serene retreat in your bedroom, a pale blue color can do that. If you’re looking for a bold statement in your living room, a bright yellow can do that. Make sure that you go through each room in your home and think about its purpose. Then, choose a wall color that would go perfectly with your idea, and start painting.

Mistake #3: Clutter

The goal of interior design is deception. For example, if you have a very small room, you need to use interior design to make the room appear bigger. One mistake that homeowners tend to make with interior design is by cluttering their rooms. You don’t need to put every piece of furniture you own on display, so if you have a couch, a chair, tables, consoles, and other furniture stuffed into your living room, now is the time to remove this clutter. Simply taking some furniture away is enough to give your room a whole new look and feel. Try putting furniture in other areas of the home too, which is a great way to get the style you want, remove clutter, and save some money.

Mistake #4: Mismatched Style

Some mismatching is acceptable when decorating your home, such as contemporary farmhouse style. However, there are times when mismatching is unacceptable. For example, if every door handle in your home is oil rubbed bronze, don’t add a brushed nickel door handle to the new door you just put on, otherwise it will look out of place. If you have all wood end tables in your living room, adding that glass coffee table may stand out—and not in a good way. Try and determine the type of style you like in your home, whether modern, classic, or somewhere in between, and then carry this throughout the rest of your home. Keeping some type of consistency is much better for the interior décor of your home than a smorgasbord of items and styles.
