Stay Away From Those Flip-Flops: How To Dress For The Summer

There’s nothing easy about deciding what to wear over the summer, but here are some tips that are sure to help!

What Sort Of Shirt Looks Good?

Let’s face it, your choice of shirt over the summer says more about you than you might like to admit to yourself. If you don’t loosen your top button on the way home from work then you look like you might be a little uptight, and if you hide away in your usual white shirts and flannels, not only will you overheat but you’ll also stick out like a sore thumb in the middle of a summery sea of bright colours. If you think you can pull it off, then you can go for novelty shirts with bright prints and colours – a Hawaiian shirt can look great if it’s worn with enough panache and cool irony. If not, then you might want to go for block colours that are a little brighter than the ones you may want to wear over winter.

You Can Go For Shorts

Shorts are perfectly acceptable to wear for a lot of occasions. Tailored shorts with a good pair of shoes can look fine even if you’re going out to dinner, although let’s face it – jorts (jean shorts) don’t look good on many people. Just don’t go for combat shorts and you’ll be absolutely fine. Check out a men’s boutique for ideas and inspiration. Remember that the most important thing about picking out shorts is that they fit you well.

What About Shoes?

Shoes are one of the hardest things for men to pick out and wear over the summer. First of all, you should remember that frankly in most situations, no one wants to see your toes unless they’re in exceptionally good condition. Don’t wear sandals or flip-flops to work – instead go for a good quality deck shoe, and low top sneakers when you’re out of work, like Vans or Converse. Sandals are appropriate mostly for vacations, for brunch, and – okay, okay, let’s be kind, good quality leather sandals are perfectly okay to wear with shorts on the hottest days of the year. Just make sure that you don’t go for hiking sandals unless you’re actually hiking.

Take Care Of Your Skin And Hair

In the summer it’s important to remember that you should take care of your skin and hair. The sun can have a bad effect on both of those things – your hair can get dry and unpleasant feeling, so you need to make sure that you use a little conditioner and that you wear hats wherever you can (particularly if you don’t have the thickest hair in the world). Put sunscreen on any part of your body that will be exposed to the sun, from your face to the tops of your ears to the tops of your feet – sunburn is painful and unattractive, and it can also damage your skin permanently, leading to premature ageing like wrinkles and discoloration and maybe even skin cancer further down the line.
