If you have had many first dates that failed to lead to a second, you might be wondering where you are going wrong. While it could come down to a lack of connection, you also might be making a few mistakes that could be affecting your love life.

If you have a date lined up but don’t want to make a silly gaffe, read these five top tips for landing a second one.

1. Get to Know Someone Before a Date

Silence is the last thing you will want to hear on a date. Getting to know someone before a first date can help the conversation to flow naturally, as you’ll understand some of their hobbies, likes, and dislikes beforehand. Dropping the occasional text message before a date can increase the excitement for dinner or a trip to the movies, and it will also provide an insight into your date’s personality and sense of humor.

2. Offer to Pay

It doesn’t matter if you’re male or female. You should offer to pay at least your share of the bill. If you can’t afford to pay for dinner at a high-end restaurant, suggest a cheaper alternative, such as grabbing a coffee or going for ice cream.

While your date might be more than happy to pay, they might appreciate the offer, and you won’t appear selfish, cheap, and rude. It’s one mistake that could stand in the way of a second date.

3. Improve Your Kissing Skills

A bad kiss could prevent a date from asking you out again. If they don’t feel a spark between you when you kiss for the first time, they might not see the point in a second date. If you want to ensure there are fireworks between you both on a first date, you might need to work on your technique to become a good kisser. For instance, you might need to improve your timing, French kissing approach, and oral hygiene.

4. Don’t Be Late

Lateness will provide your date with a bad first impression, which might be difficult to recover from. If you don’t show up on time, they might view you as rude and inconsiderate, which are qualities they might not want in a spouse. If you’re going to be late, try to provide as much notice as possible, and don’t forget to apologize for your tardiness.

5. Treat Others with Respect

Even if you’re perfectly polite and friendly with your date, they will judge you by how you treat others. If you’re rude to waitstaff or disrespectful to a doorman, your date might want to run for the hills. After all, it might be a matter of time until you treat them with the same disrespect. Even if your food is late, your order is wrong, or there is a queue to enter a venue, be patient and polite to others. If you’re not, you shouldn’t be surprised if your date doesn’t reply to your texts or states you’re better off as friends.
