We are living in the heyday of geek chic, when a love of computers and a passion for coding is no longer viewed as solely the domain of basement dwellers. Indeed, to be a man in full now requires not only social cachet and cultured tastes, but a respectable level of technological sophistication.

I don’t mean that you need to study a programming language or learn how to solder a circuit board. I’m saying that you should have a good working knowledge of the technology you use in daily life, so you don’t look foolish for stumbling over simple technological gaffes. You don’t want people to think you’re dumber than your smartphone.

Here are a few tips to help you to be a more tech savvy person:

Integrate your social media accounts.

Who has the time to keep track of all their social media activity? Apparently, some people have no trouble with that kind of thing. But if you’re more like me, you’ll benefit from a social media integration tool that lets you manage different social media sites from one platform. There are several to choose from, including HootSuite, Sprout Social, and Buffer.

Use a password manager.

A major issue with having various social media accounts, as well as email accounts and memberships on sites such as Amazon—you have to keep track of passwords. You don’t want to use the same password for all websites, and you don’t want one that’s easy to guess. I recommend using a password manager to keep this potential security hole protected. KeePass is one of my favorite tools for this.

Lock others out of your devices.

If anyone can pick up your phone or tablet and start snooping into it… well, that’s not good. Be sure to enable your device’s native lock screen protection. Or you may prefer to install a lock screen application. If you have an Android device, try CM Locker—it’s what I use, and I’m happy with it.

Back up your files.

It’s smart to protect yourself, but there is never any guarantee that a hacker won’t get into your device. Worst case scenario, you lose all your files. That’s why I keep backups of mine, and you’d be wise to follow suit. But if you do lose important files—due to a hack or hardware crash—don’t despair, deleted files recovery is often achievable. The best recovery software download I recommend comes from EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard.  It allows you to recover data from hard drive or recover photos from sd card. A must have for every computer.
