Concealing Hair Loss

Whilst alopecia and hair loss in women is often seen as one of the worst things that can happen to them, men losing their hair is often overlooked and seen as part of life. It is often not thought of as a problem and something that just happens to all men. Men will often wear a baseball cap to conceal their hair loss – others just go bald.

Whether your hairline is receding, you have a balding spot or you’ve lost all your hair, you may find you’re often the subject of jokes down the pub – and even if it is just a bit of banter with your mates, sometimes the reality of losing your hair is far from something funny.

Some men can accept they have lost their hair and it isn’t growing back, however for others acceptance simply isn’t that easy and they will try anything to encourage some regrowth on their scalp.

The unfortunate thing about hair loss is it is near impossible to encourage lost hair to return and the market is full of products and potions that promise to give us back a full head of hair, yet don’t work. But whilst trying to boost hair growth might not be possible yet, there are plenty of little things you can do to stop further hair from falling out or disguise the hair loss that you have already suffered.

Medications

There is nothing on the market that promises 100% regrowth and future hair loss prevention, however, there are two types of medication that will prevent further loss and could encourage slight regrowth (studies have shown slight regrowth for a selection of men). Both medicines are prescription-only and one comes in the form of a pill, whilst the other is a cream rubbed into the affected areas of the scalp. Speak to your doctor or GP about taking Propecia or Regaine to aid your hair loss.

Wigs and Hair Pieces

Whilst traditionally wigs were reserved for women and toupees deemed a bit of a joke within modern society, wigs for men have come a long way from the scratchy, off-color hairpieces of yesteryear. As more and more men speak up about being affected by their hair loss, the market was taken by storm, encouraging more and more wig designers to come up with undetectable hairpieces for men.

Hair Transplants

Hair transplants may seem a little extreme, however, for many men the idea of having a full head of hair again is all they can think about. Hair transplants work by taking out individual hairs and their follicles and implanting them in the areas where hair loss has occurred. It is often expensive treatment, can be a little uncomfortable, and can take a while to show a difference – you may also need further transplants, as your hairline continues to recede – but it is the best way to regain a full head of hair again.

If you’re considering a hair transplant it is of paramount importance that you find a good doctor and look at examples of his work, rather than opting for the cheapest offer. Finding a great doctor who does a great job can make all the difference to how you feel about yourself moving forward.
