Is It Time for a Daddy Do-Over?

You’re probably already familiar with the concept of the mommy makeover: the all-in-one plastic surgery that can transform a woman’s body back to her pre-pregnancy state. In fact, during the past decade, the demand for procedures associated with the mommy makeover has risen dramatically. But somewhere in this trend, the needs of dads have been overlooked. Enter the “daddy do-over” — the newest sensation in plastic surgery options for men.

The demand for Daddy do-overs

Men, just like women, face their own self-esteem battles as they enter middle-age and begin to notice the effects of father time. Juggling the responsibilities in the home with providing for one’s family can take its toll. And of course, testosterone levels naturally begin to decline after the age of 40, which makes it even harder for guys to stay in shape.

The emotional stress and sheer fatigue of being up all night with a sick toddler or dealing with the drama of teens can contributing to a man’s growing paunch and general “sagginess.” Men are also likely to see the effect of daddy-hood on their hairlines.

So why shouldn’t men treat themselves to a cosmetic pick-me-up? Plastic surgery is no longer squarely in the realm of women. Since 1997, the number of men undergoing some sort of plastic surgery has increased by an astonishing 106 percent. In 2012, men had nearly one million elective plastic surgeries. The most commonly requested procedure was liposuction.

Many guys want a more youthful or toned appearance for personal and professional reasons. These days, more CEOs and entrepreneurs than ever are incredibly young compared to previous decades (think Mark Zuckerberg). Youthfulness in the workplace is increasingly seen as an advantage, rather than a drawback. And with cosmetic surgery, middle-aged men get the best of both worlds: the wisdom that comes with experience and the look of an energetic, younger man.

Procedures customized for optimal results

Just like the mommy makeover, the daddy do-over doesn’t refer to one or two procedures in particular, although some are certainly more popular than others. Rather, men are encouraged to fully customize their new body depending on existing problem areas. Men can also opt for a tummy tuck, which can be far more effective than liposuction alone for those who have excess skin in the belly area. During a tummy tuck, the plastic surgeon uses liposuction to gently remove excess fat. Then, the abdominal muscles are re-tightened and excess skin removed for slimmer contours. This procedure also eliminates pesky love handles.

Gynecomastia is a problem that guys still tend to speak about in whispers, despite the fact that nearly half of all men will experience minor excess breast tissue growth at some point in their lives. Male breast reduction surgery is an effective way to finally resolve “man boobs.”

Other popular daddy do-over procedures include minimally-invasive facial rejuvenation with Botox injections and dermal fillers, which give a refreshed appearance. In more severe cases of sagging skin and deep wrinkles, facelifts and eyelifts deal with the accumulated effects of gravity over the years.
