For any aspiring gentleman, Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot may be a little dated by today’s standards. But he  was certainly the ultimate gentleman back in the 1940s. Christie wrote this fictional detective to be incredibly well-mannered, well-groomed, and highly intellectual. All these marks of a perfect gentleman stand any man in good stead today, although few of us would dare don the Poirot mustache!

Poirot’s character was incredibly well-defined by the last book about the detective in 1975. Perhaps the most well-known story featuring Poirot was ‘Murder on the Orient Express’. The setting for this put the upper classes back on the map of popularity, and all their incredibly flamboyant wealth that went with it. Today, a gentleman needn’t be wealthy, but a little experience and cultural insight can go a very long way!

Christie wrote that Poirot joined the Brussels Police force in 1893. A lot has changed in Brussels since then, and Belgium has begun to really assert itself on the tourist map. As a center of business and politics in Europe, Brussels is well known to the suited man. But now the gentleman can be well catered for in a remarkable number of new swanky hotels across the city. Check out websites like Venere to see what suits you for your next visit to Brussels.

Visiting Brussels is easy by Eurostar train or by plane. With easy access to the rest of Europe via France and Germany, Belgium is a great starting point for any tour of this area. Belgium is well-known for its particular flavor of beer, and Delirium bar certainly delivers a few draughts to keep you going! The Centre Belge de la Bande Dessinée is Brussels’ world renowned comic book strip center. Brussels has the most comic book artists in the world.
