Choosing the Best Car

Firstly, it’s important to know that there is no best car overall. According to Tyre Shopper, what is best depends on your personal circumstances. For example, there’s no reason to have a super fuel efficient vehicle which is significantly more expensive than similar models if your daily commute is only 10 minutes. The opposite is true too, you might save more money over the life of the car if it’s fuel efficient compared to shaving off a few hundred pounds for a cheaper, but less economical, model.

So, below, we’ve put together a quick list of the types of commute that you could associate yourself with. These are Short, Long, Winter and Summer and you might be surprised as to what type of vehicle will be the best fit for your driving circumstances.

Short Commute

This is typically less than 10 minutes, in an urban setting. Naturally, for these types of commutes a small car will be sufficient and actually be an advantage, especially if there’s traffic or tight parking. Fuel efficiency won’t be the most important factor, however as you would choose a smaller car, this isn’t always an issue.

Long Commute

Probably the worst kind of commute, long drives to work mean that you need fuel efficiency, comfort and reliability. Throw in business calls along the way and you’re looking at getting a model with the latest in communications technology – think hands-free, Bluetooth, sat nav etc. Here, the smallest cars won’t be suited to longer commutes, especially if you’re hitting the motorways.

Winter Commute

For those of us in the northern hemisphere, you’ll know that when it snows, everything on the roads descents into chaos. Driving in the winter requires specific technical demands on your car, so choosing one that is suited, or at least adaptable, is essential. AWD or 4WD is the key here, with great exhaust parts and enough ground clearance to get around snow banks or under the car if you get trapped. This doesn’t mean that you need a 4×4 though, or big SUV, many saloon cars come with these as standard, so, unless you plan on ploughing the roads yourself instead of taking a public road, you’ll be more than ready for winter.

Summer Commute

In the summertime, commuting can be fun. What could be better than top-down driving to lift your spirits on the drive home? Consider a convertible or a small, efficient sports car, and you’ll gain more than fuel efficiency for your drive.
