Money Saving Tips Around the Home

We all enjoy spending money on fun things but sometimes those household bills just get in the way and there isn’t enough left after everything has been paid to really enjoy yourself. However, don’t worry – there are lots of different ways to save money around your home, and each one will give you extra cash to spend, or even to put into a savings account for a rainy day.

Renegotiate Your Rent or Mortgage

No matter whether you’re renting or you’re paying off a mortgage, if you’ve never missed a payment and your finances are in good order, you might be able to renegotiate and get yourself a better deal. Your bank or lender is the first port of call if you have a mortgage – try to get a deal on a better interest rate, or reduce the term of the mortgage so you pay less interest on the deal. When it comes to renters, there’s no harm in speaking to your landlord. Whilst you probably won’t get a reduction in your rent, you might get a better deal with utilities thrown in, for example.

Spare Change

Spare change can soon add up, so don’t leave it lying around the house and lose it; scoop it up and put it into a jar. Keep the jar by the side of your bed, so you don’t forget it’s there, and when it’s full, get the coins changed into notes. You will be surprised by how much is in there!

Switch Energy Suppliers

Most people stick with the same energy suppliers because it feels as though it would be hard to switch to another, even if it would mean saving money. It’s not a hard thing to do, and if you go to a supplier like Pinergy in Ireland you can even track how much you’re spending on an app – knowing this will keep you on your toes and remind you to switch off lights and shut down computers.

Go Paperless

Did you know that you’re being charged whenever you receive a paper statement or invoice from a bank or supplier? Check their terms and conditions and you’ll see it written there. You’re also being charged when you pay with a check, or any other means other than online. Set up a standing order for the payments, or pay online (it’s safe to do so) and you’ll save money.

Use Your Food

How much food do you throw in the trash on a weekly basis? How many times have you gone to the store to buy supplies because you thought you were out, only to find that there is another jar, pot, or bottle of whatever it was you bought sitting in the back of the larder? Too many times. It’s costing you money. Empty out your cupboards, fridge, and freezer, and make an inventory of what you have. Then you can plan upcoming meals around what’s already in the home. Once you’ve used everything up, you can stock up again.

Make Coffee at Home

If you like a cup of coffee in the morning, you might be buying it from a coffee shop. While it tastes great, it also costs a fair amount, and if you’re doing that five days a week it will soon add up. Use the money you would have spent on coffee to buy a good home coffee maker and a travel cup. Brew your own coffee in the morning and take it with you. After a little while, you’ll be saving money.
