As Tony Robbins says, “If you do what you’ve always done, you’ll get what you’ve always gotten.” Running a business is a tough game, and it might be hard to find time for reflection, but what better time than the new year? Whether you’re just starting out with your business or you’ve been going for years, there is always room for learning, and there is always an opportunity for positive change. Why not make 2019 your year?

These tried and tested new year’s resolutions are especially for business-minded entrepreneurs. Give them a go, and watch the positive changes take place both in your personal and professional life.

1. Update your website

It may sound like a really bog standard thing to do, but did you know that most companies are not happy with the website they have? It may just be a case of switching up the home page with fresh colours and fresh information, or perhaps you have been meaning to get an active blog up and running. Your existing customers will look twice at new info, and new customers will be drawn in more easily. Make sure you are aware of which pages have success and which don’t, which brings us nicely onto point 2.

2. Get an SEO expert

Digital is everything. There are still company owners out there who are oblivious to the importance of Search Engine Optimisation (SEO), and it can make or break a modern business. If you’re not sure, SEO is essentially a process of influencing online visibility, through keywords, site and page optimisation, and backlinks. The more Google bots respect your site and hold it in high authority, the higher it will appear in search engine results. Subsequently, the more traffic (and sales!) you will ultimately get. Most companies outsource SEO to a marketing agency, some have in-house SEO staff. Whatever you choose, you must not turn a blind eye to the importance of this, if you want to succeed long term.

3. Plan guaranteed family time

It’s hard to find time for everything when you run a business, and sadly the first thing to suffer is often family life. As your calendar fills up with meetings and tasks, try to schedule a 100% guaranteed ‘timeout’ with family and loved ones. That one hour every day can really make a difference to your personal relationships, whether it’s your wife, children, siblings or even your parents. Book a meal out, plan a walk around the park, or simply guarantee you’ll be home and available for a certain time in the evenings, so you can eat together and catch up. Business is important, but not as important as family!

4. Meet your accountant (or get one)

If you still don’t have an accountant, absolutely get one. Not only will they free up so much time for you to focus on other things, they generally make the complicated seem quite simple. Getting bogged down with finances is one of the biggest stresses of running a business, whereas an accountant, skilled in their field, will make it seem like a walk in the park. If you already have an accountant, schedule time to meet them during the new year, and make clear short and long terms plans for 2019. It’s always best to get things down on paper, and you can let them work their magic once they have listened to your plans.

5. Get a coworking space

Times are changing in the business world. Coworking spaces have become a groundbreaking new way to operate, as they are generally quite affordable and give you much more than just setting up a confined office. Not only is coworking a constant opportunity for networking, but it’s also more fun, more sociable, and known to be a more productive workspace for your employees. Manchester coworking spaces Accelerate Places actually specialise in early-stage entrepreneurs, so if you’re starting out or thinking of setting up a business in 2019, check them out!

Whatever your choices for the beginning of 2019, make them good ones. Have a great new year and the best of luck with your business ventures.
