Still dating

If you are still dating and not yet an “official couple,” but you can see the relationship becoming more serious, Valentine’s Day provides a little excitement and anxiety for you both, and you don’t want to underplay or overplay your hand. Book a table for two at a lovely restaurant on the Day, and choose a Valentine’s gift for her. By building your relationship, you may find that this is the Day you become official.

Going through a rocky patch

Life sends all of us curveballs to negotiate, and regardless of how long you have been together, if you and your girl are going through a tough time, this is the moment that you want to put in writing how much you love her. It doesn’t matter if your writing is scrawly, write from the heart how much you love her, what you admire about her, and what qualities you have always found attractive. Give your commitment to improving your bond and suggest a meal out at one of her favorite restaurants or think of something entirely new to break the rut that is negatively impacting on your relationship, which could get you back on smoother ground.

Your first Valentine’s Day together

Now is your chance to pull out all the romantic gestures, starting with red roses, a surprise bouquet of her favorite blooms, or a dozen red roses. Have these delivered to her office as a public statement of your love for her? Order a few days in advance to be sure the florist has a delivery slot for your order.

Together beyond the honeymoon stage

You’ve been together more than a year and have learned to settle into life together, past the initial honeymoon phase. Valentine’s Day for you is a chance to book a romantic getaway just for the two of you. This could be a last-minute flight somewhere she loves, or if taking leave from work is difficult, find somewhere closer to the home where you can go for a meal and spend the night in a lovely hotel.

Celebrating at home

For your Valentine’s Day celebration at home, you should cook dinner or if you don’t have time, arrange for it to be delivered. Then, focus on making the evening all about her. Draw a bubble bath for two, give her a hot oil massage, or present her with a gift that makes her feel loved and sexy. You could recreate your first date meal, print out the best photographs of you both in the last year, or choose a celebratory cake similar to the one you had at your wedding reception or a bouquet of the same flowers she held as a bride. This romantic attention to detail, along with a Valentine’s Day gift, will make for a perfect day.
