Men don’t tend to think twice about seeking help for medical complaints like back pain, headaches, and high blood pressure. However, a sense of embarrassment or shame can stop them from accessing the help they need when it comes to certain health issues. Here are three medical problems that men often have difficulty discussing and some of the best treatment options on offer to tackle them.

1) Erectile dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction certainly has the power to make men blush. However, this is a common condition. It’s estimated that half of all men aged between 40 and 70 have it to some extent. There are a host of erectile dysfunction causes. Anything that affects a man’s circulatory system, nervous system, or sexual desire can prevent him from getting or maintaining an erection. Fortunately, there are a variety of treatments on offer. If you’ve experienced this problem, you can discuss your options with your doctor.

The treatments recommended to you will depend on your individual circumstances. If the cause of your erectile dysfunction is psychological, you might need counseling to remedy the problem. If the condition is caused by an underlying physical problem, like heart disease or diabetes, you may need to be treated for that first. Your doctor might also recommend lifestyle changes, like losing weight and reducing your stress levels.

You could be eligible for prescription medicines too. Viagra is the best known of these treatments, but other options include Sildenafil, Cialis, Levitra, and Spedra.

2) Hair loss

Hair loss is another major cause of embarrassment among men. Despite the fact that receding and thinning hair is common, it can cause men’s self-esteem to plummet. Male pattern baldness affects around half of the men by age 50, although for some people, the process starts decades earlier. A genetic condition, it causes the hormone testosterone to be converted into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which damages hair follicles.

The most effective treatment currently on offer is finasteride, more commonly known by the brand name Propecia. Taken as a tablet once a day, it reduces the effect of DHT on hair follicles, and it has been shown to be effective in approximately 90% of men with mild to moderate male pattern baldness. However, bear in mind that if the treatment is stopped, hair loss usually resumes within six to 12 months.

3) Snoring

Snoring can be a sensitive subject too. Although this problem can affect both genders, it’s much more common among men. In fact, the problem affects twice as many men as women. Caused by the vibration of soft tissue in the head and neck as people breath in and out, it can range from mild to severe. In some cases, it can result in excessive tiredness, and it can cause tension between partners.

All too often, people assume there’s nothing they can do about their snoring. In fact, there are a variety of techniques and treatments that can be used to tackle the problem.  Lifestyle changes, like losing weight and cutting alcohol consumption, are usually recommended first. Anti-snoring devices if you suffer from sleep apnea, including nasal strips and mouth guards, can be used too. In certain circumstances, surgery is recommended.

Whatever your medical problems, don’t let embarrassment get in the way of you from seeking treatment. Plenty of help is available, and taking action could dramatically improve your quality of life.
