Golden Rules: The Guide To Classic Men’s Style

Sometimes style trends can be pretty changeable things. After, society once found frosted tips an acceptable hairstyle decision. You never know what’s going to be on the cutting edge a few years and what’s going to get left behind. That being said, there are also some style rules that hold true no matter what. Rules that, from now until the end of time, men should hold onto to ensure they achieve that classic, timeless style. A, fortunately, most of them are pretty darn easy to follow. Here are some of the golden rules of men’s style.

Your suit is worthless if it doesn’t fit

Every man should own a suit; that’s just a fact of life. If you’re grown man, and you want to be taken seriously, then you need to be able to suit up when the occasion calls for it. The problem is that even when a lot of men take this advice to heart, they don’t realize how their suit should be sitting on their bodies. The most common mistake is men who buy suits that are far too big. They hang off their shoulders and make them look like little kids trying on their dad’s clothes for the first time. If you can afford it, there’s no substitute for a fully tailored suit, but that’s not always an option. Even if you’re buying off the rack, you should make sure that you’re getting a suit that properly fits. Check your shoulders, do the pads end when your shoulders do? Excellent. How about the cuffs? You should be able to see half an inch of shirt sleeve poking out. Little rules like this are an excellent way to remind yourself how the suit should be fitting.

Not every man needs a beard

Look, I get it, beards are very hot right now. A well-groomed beard gives off a fantastic air of dignified masculinity. You see a bearded man and he looks like someone in charge of himself. The problem is that’s not always what a beard looks like. Some men just aren’t able to grow a decent beard. It ends up looking greasy, scraggly and unimpressive. Here’s the thing: there’s nothing wrong with that! If you can’t grow a beard, then embrace that! Use it to your advantage. The clean shaven look can be as timelessly classic as the beard. Hey, Bond never had a beard, did he? If you are one of the lucky hirsute few, then you should always make sure that your beard is well cared for. Real style doesn’t need to shout

If you feel the need to make sure everyone knows about your style, then you’re doing it wrong. One of the most timeless things about men’s style is that quiet dignity that comes with it. Remember, as Sir Hardy Amies said, “A man should look as if he’s bought his clothes with intelligence, put them on with care and then forgotten all about them.”
