Five Men’s Hairstyles to Try

The new year calls for a new look. Whether you completely shake up your style or make minimal changes to your grooming game, it’s important to select a hairstyle that’s on trend.

With so many options to choose from, we asked Michael Mealey, a Great Clips stylist, to share five hairstyles he’s excited to see more of this year and step-by-step instructions to style them.

1. High-Fade Crop

Drawing influence from the U.K., the extremely popular high-fade crop is styled by cutting the hair short on top and shaving the sides. To give the look more definition and increase ease of styling, the high-fade crop should be cut with a very short bang that falls on the forehead. To amp up the look, use GRIT @ Great Clips Natural Style men’s styling gel, with low hold and shine, to push short hair forward and emphasize hair texture.

2. Low Fade Blended Beard

The beard fade, a look that transitions from a gentleman’s low tapered haircut to their blended beard, is one of the coolest beard styles right now. It is low maintenance hairstyle that looks fresh and clean. Use GRIT @ Great Clips Cleansing Style spray to regularly clean the beard, and apply GRIT @ Great Clips Natural Style men’s styling gel to add texture and shine.

3. Wavy, Shaggy Long Locks

Inspired by X Games athlete Bobby Brown, this low-maintenance hairstyle is perfect for the no-fuss gentleman. To style this look, towel dry long hair until it’s mostly dry. Then, run a dime-size amount of GRIT @ Great Clips Natural Style men’s styling gel through the hair to add definition and a bit of shine.

4. Disconnected Undercut

This style is the most popular variation of the undercut trend. To achieve this look, keep the top of the hair long and cut both sides of the hair the same very short length. This will create a contrast between the sides and top of the hair that isn’t gradual. To give the look definition, blend the hair to give it more detail using a feather razor, point cut or blending shears and add GRIT @ Great Clips styling product. Apply Natural Style men’s styling gel to keep hair looking loose, GRIT @ Great Clips Firm Style men’s styling gel to keep hair firmly in place or GRIT @ Great Clips Flexible Style men’s styling gel to create a textured look.

5. Pompadour High Fade

Many men today are styling their hair in a variation of the classic pompadour style that was originally popular in the 1950s. The signature height and roll are still center stage, but what’s different is the type of fade. A high fade is recommended to create a stark yet trendy contrast between lengths that is ultra edgy and great for work or play. To amplify this look, use GRIT @ Great Clips Firm Style men’s styling gel as a primer. Do so by applying the product to damp hair and blow dry to achieve volume. Finish the look with GRIT @ Great Clips Flexible Style men’s styling gel for medium shine and great definition.
