More people than ever are choosing to return to school after a gap. This is often to help them secure a promotion or a career change. While studying can be difficult and time consuming, quite often when we choose to study later in life, we have to do it around work. We simply can’t afford to take time out or can’t put our careers on hold. Look After Yourself
When we’re busy, and tired, we often get run down and pick up illnesses. You haven’t got time to be sick, so make sure you look after yourself, both physically and emotionally. Be sure to get a good night’s sleep when you can. Eat a healthy and balanced diet, full of immune system boosting vitamins and minerals, and get some exercise when you can. You might not have time to hit the gym, but at least take some time out to go for a walk or run. This will help keep you healthy, and reduce your stress levels.

Ask for Help
If you need help, ask for it. Speak to your employer about reducing your workload or taking some time off. You might be able to work part time or schedule some holiday time. You can also speak to your tutors if you need some extra support.
Get into a Routine
Try to find a routine that works for you. Some people study best first thing in the morning when they feel most alert. If this is the case, get up a little earlier and fit in an hour’s study time before work. Other people like to leave work behind, have a break, and then get stuck in. We all work differently, so experiment with your routine until you find something that works, then stick to it as much as you can.
Take Some Time Off
Remember to take some time off. Completely off, no studying, and no work. Either do something fun, or relax; whatever you need. Try to take one day a week to yourself if you can and a proper vacation occasionally. In the weeks where this isn’t possible at least switch off for a few hours.
There will be times when you need to prioritize one thing over the other. If you have exams coming up, get time off work. If there’s a big work project that needs your full attention, make sure you can catch up on your studies later. A lot of the time you’ll be able to find a balance, but on the odd occasion one thing requires your full attention make sure you can give it.
There is no reason why you can’t have it all. Follow this advice, and you’ll do great. Studying can be challenging, but ultimately rewarding. If you start to feel like it’s becoming too much, remind yourself of why you’re doing it, and what you hope to achieve.
